These notes are specific to my process, I’m not sure if they will be of interest to anyone else, although the editing process using AI is perhaps interesting.

Using FCP 11.2 on OSX.

  1. Editing video takes a lot of disk space. It’s not good to have large video files stored on iCloud because iCloud space is managed automatically by OSX and it’s annoying to have to wait for large files to be downloaded. I have purchased a large reasonably fast external drive (Crucial X10 2TB SSD) to get around this problem.
  2. Dragging a clip to the timeline is different to importing a clip via the menu. It is better to import clips via the menu.
  3. When recording both a screen grab and video, remember to have audio from both as it can be used to sync the clips, as follows:
    1. Select both clips in the event browser (not the timeline!)
    2. Clip -> Synchronize clips.
    3. Drag the compound clip to the project.
    4. Clip -> Break apart clip items.
    5. Detach the audio of the screen grab and delete it.
    6. Trim the ends (Trim -> Blade all).
  4. To apply green-screen chromakeying:
    1. Effects panel -> Masks and Keying -> Green Screen Keyer
    2. Works instantly and looks good!
  5. Add a new clip on the bottom — Custom Solid Generator #eeeeee
  6. Presenter video
    1. Scale to 90%
    2. X: +580px
    3. Y: -56px
  7. Slide video
    1. Crop top 80px
    2. Scale to 85%
    3. X: -240px
    4. Y: +100px
  8. Run the Audio Analysis tool on the voice - it will increase the volume to the right level.
