Testing recording video with different cameras
For a while I have been trying different setups for recording videos of me talking to camera. Yesterday I put up a black photographers backdrop behind my desk, and today I’ve been running various test to see which option I like the most. I have tested using:
- the built-in camera on my Apple Studio Display.
- my iPhone 14 Pro
- my Sony Alpha 7 III with Elgato Cam Link 4k.
I have been using OBS to do the recording. I won’t put all the tests here (I varied the lighting as well as the camera) but here are the main ones:
Apple Studio Display camera with replaced background
Built-in camera in the Apple Studio Display, using the OSX automatic background removal to add a consistent dark grey background.
Apple Studio Display camera
Built-in camera in the Apple Studio Display.
iPhone 14 Pro
This gave a very contrasty look, I don’t like it.
iPhone 14 Pro with with replaced background
The background is #333333. I don’t like the way the edges are fuzzy.
Sony Alpha 7 III via Elgato Cam Link 4k
This definitely looks the best I think, and the background is nicely uniform and dark even though I’m standing very close to the backdrop:
Final version
- using the Sony Alpha 7 III.
- LED panels changed to the same colour temperature as the ceiling lights.
- I changed the way OBS is saving the output because there were a lot of artifacts in the recordings:
Here is the final version:
